Behaviour vs Thinking

Have you ever tried changing your behaviour and what you do? Its not easy to change. When we try to and things get tough we "reboot" to our default settings.

So how can we change?

We fall into the trap that expects that we can just change things, but it is really difficult. What we value determines how we feel about things and that determine our actions and behaviour. To obtain meaningful change we must think differently about matters.

When we do, we change the default settings. We do this by leveraging our strengths and managing our weaknesses and avoiding those aspects that will make us fail.

Sounds too simple. But its not.

Why Life Coaching

Over the years I have been interested in Life Coaching and have looked at what is offered and also participated in a program. It was sorely disappointing. I have been reluctant to get involved for a number of reasons:
  • one of the approaches has been "I am really good at what I do so let me show you how I have been successful". This is limiting as it requires that you have to have successfully performed the role so that you can use your experience
  • another approach is to hype people to performance. This works for some people but most do not respond favourably to the emotional stirring. The disillusionment that sets in when things do not work as expected is severe and results in decreased performance from most people
  • a third approach is to define systems that govern successful behaviour and get people to fit into the systems
  • a fourth approach is to use an assessment tool to determine specifics about the person and use that as the sarting point to identify how people function and work with that. This is a better option in my mind, but ... the right tool needs to be used.

I have been exposed to a number of temperament analysis tools: Myers Briggs, DISC, LEMON, Taylor Johnson, Hypocrates model, etc. and they have great value in defining our behavioural style, but are limiting as they are linked to behaviour and not how we mentally process things.

I came across the MindScan assessment tool and completed it and was gob-smacked at the depth of insight shown. I knew then that this is the exact thing that I was missing in my efforts to establish a coaching practice. You should try it some time. http://successquestplan.com/index.php?RSchmitz&c=193
